Pandemic Origins

A New York Times guest editorial makes the case that  while finding the origin of disease outbreaks is helpful, it shouldn't deter us from taking the precautions we need to deal with the next one.

Guns

It seems to be time to add another section to OBE--the gun discussion.  What if we were to accept the idea that both sides have strong arguments on the gun issue?  We could start with the Pro-Con information.  Then, what then would be our questions for discussion?

First, let's dispense with the disrespectful or unproductive questions and comments (reading from right to left):
  • Why do you want to take our guns away?
  • Why don't we stop this violence and just make sure everyone has a gun?
  • How do you expect to get rid of 300 million guns?
  • What is your problem with the second amendment?
  • Why do you want to solve every problem with violence?

...and move on to the more respectful and productive questions that we ALL should be asking:

  • Describe what we mean when we refer to "gun culture?"  How is it like and different from "a culture of violence?" What ideas and beliefs are held in the gun culture?
  • Do other countries have gun or violence problems and how do they deal with them?
  • If people kill people, and most gun owners don't kill people, how do we get the guns out of the hands of the people who kill people?
  • How would universal background checks work?
  • What exactly does the second amendment say? How does the Heller decision interpret the second amendment?
